Harmony Program on the PBS NewsHour

On Friday night, the PBS NewsHour ran a 10-minute segment on the Harmony Program -- including interviews with students, parents, teachers, and administrators -- to demonstrate how Harmony is using classical music instruction to help children realize their strengths, talents, and potential. The piece culminates with the children's performance under the direction of Maestro Plácido Domingo at this year's annual gala in January.

Brass Ensemble Performs in Brooklyn Music Festival

P1020138The Harmony Program Brass Ensemble at PS 152 gave its first public performance as participants in the Brooklyn Philharmonic 2011 Student Chamber Ensemble Festival. Trombone students, Justin Laurenceau, Ari Gonzalez, and Malik Flemming, together with trumpeters, Jedidiah Armstrong, Kalli Roye, and Karl Charles, performed Jeremiah Clarke's Trumpet Voluntary.

Undaunted by the fact that they were among the youngest participants in the festival, the Brass Ensemble gave an outstanding performance before supporters and other guests at Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School in Brooklyn. Following their performance, WQXR reporter, Brian Wise, interviewed students and parents and featured them and the work of the Harmony Program in an article, "El Sistema Branches Out, Takes Root in Flatbush."
